Lifting Hands to Win the Battle

Bible Reading: Exodus 15:22-27; 16; 17; 18

"As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.... Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, 'For hands were lifted up to the throne of the Lord...'" (17:11-16).

I have experienced times of great struggle when it became very difficult to keep my hands lifted to the throne of the Lord, in prayer and hope. During those times, it gave me strength to know that others were lifting their hands in prayer for me and holding me steady when I could no longer stand on my own.

Lord, make me aware of those around me whose hearts are becoming so heavy and weary that they no longer have enough strength of their own to keep their hands and hearts lifted to you. May I come alongside them and lovingly support them when they are losing the fight. May I put the solid rock of your word underneath them and help them to rest on your promises. May I put their hands in mine and lift our hands, together, to your throne of grace. When they can no longer find the words to pray, the ability to hope, or the strength to endure, lay it on my heart to pray for them, encourage them, and faithfully stand with them.

When I am the one fainting in battle, provide friends who will hold my hands steady in prayer and faith until the enemy is overcome and the battle is won. May we then raise our hands in praise and worship, rejoicing in the victory that comes when hands are lifted up to your throne.
