Reviewing the Last 40 Years

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 1, 2, 3, 4

Like Moses, as I look back on the 40+ years of my life, I can see God's hand. I see how God worked in different situations, led me, protected me, and carried me safely across the "desert" times in my life, "like a father carries his son" (1:31). The Lord my God has blessed me in the work of my hands and watched over my journey (2:7). These 40 years, he has been with me, and I have not lacked anything (2:7). Sadly, I still do not trust him fully at times (1:32), even though he has always gone before me and shown me the way I should go (1:33).

Lord, thank you for the way you lead and work in my life. Countless times, you have brought a good outcome to a difficult situation. Help me trust you to continue to do that in my life. When my faith grows weak and I am enticed by sin or discouraged by my circumstances, remind me of Moses' words: "Even there, you can look for the Lord your God, and you will find him if you look for him with your whole being. It will be hard when all these things happen to you. But after that you will come back to the Lord your God and obey him, because the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you. He will not forget [his promises]" (4:29-31 NCV). Thank you for your grace and mercy to me.

Stay close to my children, too, as you lead them along their journey in life. Carry them through the hard times. Show them what you desire for their lives. When they stray from you, gently lead them back. Bring them to a place where they will look for you with their whole being and come back to you with a humble heart of obedient trust. Even when they experience painful and difficult trials, let them see that you are merciful and loving, that you will never leave them, and that you will embrace them and forgive them if they will just turn to you with open arms. Thank you that you're always waiting for us with arms wide open.
