The Energizer Blessing: It Keeps Going... and Going...

"You shall not bow down to any images nor worship them in any way, for I am the Lord your God. I am a jealous God, and I will bring the curse of a father's sins upon even the third and fourth generation of the children of those who hate me; but I will show kindness to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments" (Deut. 5:9-10 LB).

"See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse--the blessing if you obey the commands of the Lord your God...; the curse if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God and turn from the way that I command you" (Deut. 11:26-28).

Will I choose the blessing or the curse? What attitude about God will I pass down to my children - one of trust, obedience and love, or one of suspicion, defiance, and even hatred? If I turn my back on God, my rebellion will affect my children, my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren, until someone chooses to break the cycle of disobedience. If I choose to love God, however, and live according to his instructions, God will show kindness to my children, my grandchildren, my great-grandchildren, and nine-hundred, ninety-seven more generations to follow! I can leave no better inheritance! After I have been long-forgotten, the blessing will live on!

On the day that Moses challenged his people to make a choice, those who chose the blessing caused God's kindness to fall on us today, less than a thousand generations later. We are still reaping the benefits from their decision to obey God!

I am faced with the same decision. Because of God's grace, the right choice will produce much longer-lasting effects than the wrong choice, but both will reach beyond my lifetime. What will I pass down to my great-great-great-grandchildren?
