Run Away

Bible Reading:
Psalms of the Troubled Soul Psalm 35; 41; 43; 46; 55

"My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. I said, 'Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest-- I would flee far away and stay in the desert; I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.'" (55:4-8)

"Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to... the place where you dwell. Then will I go to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you, O God, my God. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." (43:3-5)

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear." (46:1-2)

"Be still, and know that I am God; ...I will be exalted in the earth." (46:10)

"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you." (55:22)

Oh, that I could run away from all my cares and troubles. When life is too heavy to bear, I wish I could run away and be at rest; "I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm" (55:8). That is exactly what I will do! I will run away to where you are, Lord. Let me find you at my quiet place by the river, or at the fountain by my home where I often see rainbows, or in a walk through the park, or in a drive through the country, or by the side of a friend. Look deep within my soul and see my anguish and fear. As I lay my heart open before you, shine your light and your truth into my soul and speak peace to me. You are my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm, where I can be at rest. Hush my anxious thoughts. Soothe my troubled spirit. Quiet my heart in your presence and let me know that you are God. You are my joy, my delight, my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. My fear melts away in your presence. Lift the burden that weighs on my soul and let me stand tall. Set me on my feet and nourish my soul. Give me new strength and courage to return to my storm-tossed world. Put your hope in my heart, your light on my face and your praise on my lips. Then I will leave my quiet place, refreshed and recharged, ready to face a new day.
