Thirst for God

Bible Reading:
Psalms Expressing a Variety of Sentiments Psalm 42; 53; 58; 81; 101

"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" (42:1-2).

"I am the Lord your God.... Open wide your mouth and I will fill it" (81:10).

Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Mt. 5:6).

"Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.'" (John 6:35; c.f. John 4:10-41)

When I am thirsty, I go to the sink, fill a cup with water, and drink until my thirst is quenched. But when my soul thirsts for God, where can I go to fill my cup and drink in his presence? I can "meet" with him anywhere I am able to shut out the distractions around me and open my soul. It may be in my chair, at my table, on my bed, in my back yard, in a park, on a mountain, by a river, on my bike, in my car, or at my church. I may be praying, singing, playing an instrument, helping someone in need, listening to a song or a sermon, marveling at God's creation, or studying God's word alone, with a friend or in a group. I will talk to him; sing to him, "chew on" his words to me, and listen to his spirit within me. I may get up early or stay up late. I can meet with God any time, anywhere.

God says that when we seek him with a sincere heart, we will find him.* He promises to fill us with himself if we will just come to him, believing, and open wide our mouths, as if to catch the rain waters of heaven on our tongues! He will satisfy our hunger with the bread of life; he will quench our thirst with living water.

I hunger and thirst more and more for the living God. I will look for him until I find him. I will pray to him until he answers me. I will lift my face toward the heavens and open wide my mouth until I am full.
