Lord, thank you for giving me friends whose kind and aptly-spoken words help me learn, cheer me up, make me feel strong, and bring me pleasure. They have often spoken the right word at the right time--beautiful!

I pray that you will use my words to nourish and bless others. Give me the right word to say at the right time. Teach me when to keep my mouth shut and when to answer gently. Remind me of the mighty power of a gentle word--to turn away anger and break down barriers. Help me to speak sweetly to my children so that they may learn from me and grow in confidence. Teach me to sift, not only my words, but also the attitude with which they are spoken, through the filter of your Spirit. "Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips" (Ps. 141:3). Instead of letting out everything that falls onto the tip of my tongue, train me to consider the impact of my words and choose only those which give life and bear fruit!
