Stand Firm; Call Him by Name

Bible Reading: Isaiah 7; 8; 9 - Listen

"If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all" (7:9).

When I am discouraged and without hope... when I am tempted to sin... when my spirit is crushed by the words or actions of others... when I feel weak and vulnerable... when I endure hardship and don't see any purpose in it... when my heart is shaken "as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind" (7:2)... when I want to give up and quit... I will choose to stand firm in my faith. If I do not stand, I will sink, stumble or fall.

How do I stand firm? I daily read and meditate on God's word. I fill my mind with God's character and truths. Despite how things appear, I choose to believe God is a "compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness" (Ex. 34:6). In the face of trouble, I take a deep breath and listen to God's advice, "Be careful, keep calm and don't be afraid. Do not lose heart..." (7:4). I approach God's throne with sincerity and earnestness. I accept and trust God's plan for me. I walk alongside friends who encourage me in my faith. I obey God's commands. I "reject the wrong and choose the right" (7:15). I seek after God's heart. I stand at attention, hold my head up, and fix my eyes on Jesus. With my eyes fixed confidently and steadfastly on "the author and perfecter of my faith" (Heb. 12:2), I can stand firm in my faith.

"I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in him" (8:17).

Even when it seems God is hiding his face from me, I will keep straining the eyes of my faith until I can clearly see his face. When he seems slow to action, I will put my trust in him and wait patiently for him to move in my life.

"He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (9:6).

I will call him by name:

Wonderful Counselor: Surpassing any counsel I receive from friends or mentors, God's counsel is perfect and wonderful. He always gives me the right counsel at the right time. He directs me to the truths in his word that I need to hear and applies them to my circumstances. He prompts others to write or say "the right word at the right time - beautiful" (Pr. 15:23 Msg). He works in my heart to reveal his desire for me.

Mighty God: When I am weak, faint, powerless and weary, God is mighty, powerful and strong. I lean on his strength; I depend on his power. Because he indwells me, his power and strength become my own.

Everlasting Father: God is my father. He nurtures and cares for me, protects me, molds and develops my character, teaches me how to live, supports and encourages me, disciplines me when I'm wrong, cheers for me when I succeed, guides my steps, and loves me unconditionally. He will never give up on me or turn his back on me. He is always there for me, with open arms and open heart. His love is eternal.

Prince of Peace: God brings peace into the midst of my chaos, restlessness, anxiety and turmoil. He calms my heart and assures me that he is in control. He holds me close until the pain and fear subside and I am quieted by his embrace.
